Working with eight national alternative transportation organizations, Meeker & Associates designed a new program of easy-to-understand symbols for bikeway signing for use on roads and non-motorized, shared-use paths. Recommendations have been made to the FHWA with designs for applications to update the existing 1979 standards in the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The primary goal is to provide consistent and appropriately scaled signs that reduce clutter and improve understanding by viewers. Researchers at Virginia Tech are assisting in validation of recommendations.
